Message OK... so, my AC broke rather Suddenly... so, I don't suspect a leak or anything...

...Maybe suddenly is an exaggeration ... the compressor had been making noise since I got the car 3 months ago... but it did suddenly stop making noise and working all at the same time one morning. I've been told it's probably the clutch bearing that was making noise and it probably finally failed.

Ok, so I have acquired a used AC compressor/clutch from a friend. So, my question is this - Can I get a shop to just swap it out? or does this used compressor need to be rebuilt?

I've read in the FSM that during AC service, the manual advises to not let the compressor lay on it's side or upside down for more than 10 minutes... This used compressor has been in storage for ... unknown amount of time. However, it does still have it's hoses still attached to it, so the chance of contaminants in the compressor itself is a little lower.

Another complication is that the car is a 93, and while I do have all the service records for the last 10 years, I'm fairly certain the conversion to R134a has never been done. So, yeah... that needs to happen too.

If I take my car to a Nissan shop, will they be willing to use a used compressor that I bring with me? or will they insist on replacing with a new/reman'd part that they order?

If I take my car to an independent repair shop, are they going to be able to tell if the compressor is even going to work before they try to put it on? I'd like to avoid doing this twice... If the used compressor is bad, I'll accept the fact and get a clean one, but If I can avoid it, I will. The used compressor DID work when it was removed. I just don't know if being in storage has hurt it.
